Layne parked her car in the underground garage of Essex House, using Tina’s guest parking spot. She grabbed her laptop bag and small overnight tote and walked to the elevator, taking it to the eighth floor.

She exited the elevator and wound her way around the circular layout to Suite 8C. She pressed the buzzer and, moments later, Tina flung open the door and exuberantly greeted her friend.

“Let the shenanigans begin,” she said kissing Layne’s cheek. She draped an arm around Layne’s shoulder and ushered her inside.

Tina’s two-bedroom was airy and spacious and furnished with an Afrocentric flair, from the bold colored accessories on the deep navy blue seating of the six-foot sectional, chaise and club chair, to the artwork and wooden figurines that made the entire space a showroom—but cozy at the same time.

“Make yourself comfortable, sis. I thought we could have dinner downstairs. Rumor has it that Chef Alonzo Grant is visiting and will be overseeing the menu,” she said with a gleam in her eyes.

“Sounds great.” Layne stepped out of her shoes and shrugged out of her light jacket before following Tina into the living area.

“Wine?”

“Sure.”

Tina poured them each a flute and joined Layne on the couch. “Really glad you came. Things kinda went left between us and I wanted to make sure we were good, ya know.”

Layne nodded. “I know. I was totally overreacting. This whole Paul thing has me off-center.”

“I get it. So we’ll do dinner, talk and plan,” Tina said with a wink.

Layne lifted her glass. “To plans.”
